Carmarthen, Wales and Surrounding Areas

Carmarthen, Tenby, Llansteffan – Wales – February 2024

Day 1

My first trip to Wales for a long time. After a 3.5 hour drive from Birmingham I arrived in Carmarthen in the pouring rain. I was staying at the Spilman Hotel. It was on a one way street with a very narrow entrance to the car park. You have to do three point turn to get into the car park from the road. After squeezing my car through and parking up, I checked in at the reception. I was staying in the Penthouse apartment. When I walked in I was surprised how big and spacious it was. It had two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and a lounge. It was much bigger than it looked on the photos. In the kitchen there were cereals, tea bags and even a selection of jams. That was a nice little touch. Everything you could need to cook was also available.

Across the road from the hotel there is a Co-op which is open from 7am to 10pm every day. There is also a Wetherspoons and an Indian restaurant (Ginger). After settling in I took my son to Wetherspoons for dinner. You can download the app and order from there or just order at the bar. The food comes quick and was delicious.

Day 2

Today was a nice sunny day. I left early in the morning to make my way to Tenby to have a look around. It took around 30 minutes to get there. I parked in the South beach car park. It was free. I think it only charges from 1st March to the end of the Summer. I walked through the town to the castle on the hill. I was a little disappointed that the castle was so small and was just one part. The views were amazing though and I enjoyed it. There are plenty of shops and restaurants. There is a harbour and also another beach on the North side.

At lunch time I decided to go to ‘No 25 Cafe’ to have lunch. I had seen some good reviews on Google. When I went in it was very busy, but luckily there was a table for one available. I ordered a brunch and a hot chocolate. It tasted so nice and the hot chocolate was lovely. The staff were very friendly. I realised before I left that there was also an upstairs with more seating. So if you are walking past and it looks busy there will probably be room upstairs.

After leaving the cafe I took a nice walk back to the car. I then set off to look at another castle and beach in Llansteffan. I parked by the beach and walked along the beach to a small road which leads up to the castle.

Once I got my first view of the castle it was amazing. It was what I expected the other one to be like. There was lots of information on the signs and you could go in some of the rooms. You could also climb to the top to get a great view.

Back I went to the hotel to relax for the evening.

Day 3

Today it was raining so there I decided to stay local. I went to St Catherine’s Walk Shopping Centre which was about 5 minutes walk from the hotel. I bought some clothes and shoes to wear for a night out. There were plenty of shops for everything. I stopped by Carmarthen castle while walking around.

I stopped for lunch at Sloppy Joe’s Streetfood. I ordered a burger with egg and bacon and a side of fries. It has to be one of the nicest burgers I have had for a long time. It was perfectly cooked and was a little greasy. The fries were lovely too.

In the evening I went to the Stag & Pheasant. A nice little pub next to my hotel to watch the football. I spoke with some of the locals in there. They were all nice and friendly. After moving on from there I ended up going to The Mansel Arms to watch a bit of karaoke. Again, there were a few locals which I spoke to and spent the rest of the night with. We moved on to another couple of bars before heading home. It was more busier than I expected but it was really nice. I then went back to the hotel ready for a long drive home in the morning.

My time in Wales was over so quickly. I had a lovely time though and can’t wait to visit other areas of Wales.
