Checklist for Travelling Abroad

Keep in mind that specific items may vary depending on your destination, duration, and personal needs, so adapt this list accordingly:

Before You Leave:

  1. Passport and Visa:
    • Ensure your passport is valid for the number of months needed. Check the Government website travel requirements for the country you are travelling to.
    • Check visa requirements for your destination and obtain if necessary.
  2. Health Preparations:
    • Carry a small first aid kit with basic medicines.
  3. Travel Insurance:
    • Purchase travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen events. I have travel insurance through my bank account which covers certain trips. Check what is covered before you travel.
  4. Itinerary and Reservations:
    • Print or save electronic copies of your flight, accommodation, and transportation reservations.
    • If you are using your phone for the boarding pass make sure it is fully charged before you travel.
    • Have contact information for accommodations and local emergency services.
  5. Money Matters:
    • Inform your bank about your travel dates to avoid any issues with your credit/debit cards.
    • Carry some local currency or a small amount of Euros for emergencies.
  6. Electronics:
    • Check the compatibility of your devices with the destination’s electrical system.
    • Bring necessary chargers and adapters.
  7. Packing:
    • Pack appropriate clothing for the climate.
    • Don’t forget essentials like toiletries, personal items, and any prescription medications.
    • Check your luggage weight if you think it is too heavy. Lots of airlines charge high amounts at the airport if you are slightly over weight or have not pre booked luggage.
  8. Important Documents:
    • Make copies of important documents (passport, ID, travel insurance, etc.).
    • Save electronic copies in a secure cloud storage.
  9. Emergency Contacts:
    • Save local emergency numbers and embassy/consulate contacts.

At the Airport:

  1. Travel Essentials:
    • Passport, boarding pass, and visa.
    • Wallet with cash, credit/debit cards.
    • Travel-sized toiletries for the flight if needed.
  2. Technology:
    • Fully charge your devices.
    • Bring headphones, travel adapter, and power bank.
  3. Comfort Items:
    • Neck pillow, blanket, or other comfort items for a long flight.

Upon Arrival:

  1. Local SIM Card or Roaming:
    • Arrange for a local SIM card or activate international roaming for your phone. Depending on your network it may be expensive to have roaming on. Check with your network provider before you travel.
  2. Transportation:
    • Familiarize yourself with local transportation options.
    • Know the location of your accommodation.
  3. Safety:
    • Be cautious with your belongings.
    • Stay informed about local safety guidelines.
  4. Health and Well-being:
    • Stay hydrated and adjust to the local time zone.
    • Be mindful of food and water safety.
  5. Exploration:
    • Plan activities and sightseeing.
    • Learn basic local phrases or carry a translation app.

Most of all enjoy preparing for your trip. Make sure you have some rest before travelling. There is nothing worse than being tired before a flight. Stay calm and relaxed. Expect slight delays to flights and be prepared.
